Foyle's War: Set 5

Amazon.com
No one was unhappy when World War II ended, but the demise of Foyles War is something else entirely. For fans of this first-rate British murder mystery series, set against the backdrop of that epic conflict, Set 5 represents something of a reprieve although Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle (Michael Kitchen) retired at the end of Set 4, circumstances force him to return to action in "Plan of Attack," the first of three 90-minute episodes (each on its own disc) offered here. But by the end of this set, the war is over and Foyle has eased back into retirement. Thats lamentable. Smartly conceived and often quite masterfully executed, this show will certainly be missed. "History meets mystery" has been the concept from the beginning, as the low-key (like Peter Falks Columbo, he knows much more than he lets on), unfailingly decent Foyle and his assistants, Sgt. Paul Milner (Anthony Howell) and driver Samantha "Sam" Stewart (Honeysuckle Weeks), solve murders and various other crimes in and around bucolic Hastings, England, while WWII rages on at home and abroad. But this time out, the war provides much more than context, as the murders tend to be directly related to it. Whats more, Set 5 affectingly deals with combats heavy emotional psychological toll. Its a burden we see carried by the cartographer who cant bear knowing that his work is helping to kill innocent German civilians (in "Plan of Attack") by the maimed former POW struggling to readjust to life at home, the teenager whose job it is to deliver bad news telegrams to soldiers families, and the Jewish doctor, a refugee from Poland, whose survivors guilt leads him down a very dark path (all three in "Broken Souls") and even by Foyles own son (Julian Ovenden, in "All Clear"). OK, so the mysteries may not be all that mysterious--perceptive viewers will have little difficulty identifying the culprits. But with its multi-layered storytelling (the scripts were written by creator Anthony Horowitz) and fine production values (the cinematography, editing, and music are all excellent), Foyles War is a whodunit thats both a prime example of its genre and thoroughly successful on its own unique terms. Bonus features include a brief "making of" featurette and cast filmographies. --Sam Graham

Customer ReviewsFoyles War - Season Five
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
First, my shopping experience with amazon.com was easy. Now for the product. Being fans of the British television series may color my review. Season Five of Foyles War was everything I wanted: questions answered, the war (WWII) ended, the characters accounted for. My only regret is that it was the last. Excellent series, excellent actors. The bonus feature recounting a "real" Detective Foyle reminded one that, although the series was fiction, it was based on fact.
Highly recommended - especially for Anglophiles or anyone interested in WWII history.

This is Series 5 of a PBS Masterpiece Theatre Mystery series, excellently done in the UK. I fell in love with this series on TV and wanted to own the set. Was thrilled that part 5 came out. Done in the same classic style as the Merchant and Ivory films. I downt own many DVDs, but started collecting good classics that I love like this. The acting is superb, the English country-side divine, the suspense thrilling, and the overall experience world class. I highly recommend.

This series like the others that preceded it paint a vivid picture of rural England during and just after the Second World War. Who could have ever believed that all these intrigues and treachery existed so far from London and the Front and how Foyle and his band of faithful cohorts solved them all. Too bad the war is over.

Having tried both the gel and ointment, I recommend the gel. It is more pleasant to apply and seems to absorb faster.

Brideshead Revisited (25th Anniversary Collector's Edition)

Description
25th Anniversary Collectors Edition
"Extraordinary" The New York Times
"Visually ravishing" Time
A special silver anniversary edition of the British classic called one of the best series in TV history. Based on the novel by Evelyn Waugh, two years in the making, and the equivalent of seven feature films back-to-back, this epic drama tells a story of romantic yearning and loss in the glittering but fading world of the British aristocracy between the wars. Winner of 17 international awards and starring Jeremy Irons, Anthony Andrews, Diana Quick, Sir John Gielgud, Claire Bloom, and Sir Laurence Olivier in an Emmy-winning role. Bonus features on this edition include the 50-min. featurette Revisiting Brideshead, produced by British television to celebrate the anniversary and featuring retrospective interviews with Irons, Andrews, Quick, director Charles Sturridge, and many more. Also includes a 20-page program guide, production notes, and photo gallery.

Fill a bowl with alpine strawberries, break out the Chteau Lafite (1899, of course), and bask in this benchmark 1981 British miniseries based on Evelyn Waughs classic novel. Adapted for the screen by John Mortimer (Rumpole of the Bailey), this impeccable, nearly 11-hour production mesmerized American viewers during the course of its PBS run in 1982. In his breakthrough role, Jeremy Irons stars as Charles Ryder, a disillusioned Army captain who is moved to reflect on his "languid days" in the "enchanted castle" that was Brideshead, home of the aristocratic Marchmain family, whose acquaintance Charles made in the company of an Oxford classmate, the charming wild child Sebastian. Anthony Andrews costars as the doomed Sebastian, whose beauty is "arresting" and "whose eccentricities and behavior seemed to know no bounds." The "entitled and enchanted" Sebastian takes Charles under his wing ("Charles, what a lot you have to learn"), but vows early on that he is "not going to let Charles get mixed up with his family." But mixed up Charles gets. He becomes a friend and confidante, not to mention a lover, to Sebastians sister Julia (Diana Quick). Meanwhile, the self-destructive Sebastians life spirals out of control. Brideshead Revisited boasts a distinguished ensemble, including Laurence Olivier in his Emmy Award-winning role as the exiled Lord Marchmain, Claire Bloom as Lady Marchmain, and the magnificent John Gielgud as Charless estranged father. Grand locations and a haunting musical score make this a memorable revisit of an irretrievable bygone era. For those who scheduled their weeks around the original Monday-night broadcasts or those visiting Brideshead for the first time, this boxed set release will be, as Charles rhapsodizes at one point while strolling the castle grounds, "very near to heaven." --Donald Liebenson

Customer ReviewsMINI-SERIES: THE GOLD STANDARD
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
"Brideshead Revisited" set the gold standard for TV mini-series. It is without peer in all aspects, except technical. Writing, acting, direction are all first rate. This drama is utterly compelling from beginning to end. The only complaint I have is that its technical aspects, which were standard at the time of its production, 1981, are deficient today. The 16mm format is obsolete as a production standard now, and its a real pity the originals for "Brideshead Revisited" do not survive in better condition. In spite of that, this series is not to be missed. The restoration on view here is the best possible, so go for it. It will cost you less than a bottle of Dom Perignon, and will last a lot longer. Cheers!

I didnt see that TV show and I dont find any interest in the principle
of the thing. As british TV shows are usually first released as DVDs in
America, I wish for the release of SCOOP, a London Weekend Television production (the week end branch of ITV)of 1986, a VIDEO COLLECTION VHS in 1990. This 120 minutes teleplay was directed by Gavin Millar, scripted by Wlliam Boyd, played by Denholm Elliott, Michael Hordern, Michael Maloney, Herbert Lom and Donald Pleasence. Does that make your mouth water?
It was very funny too, quite worthy of the novel.

I loved the Soweto Gospel Choir when I saw them on TV and decided to order the CD. As a professor in a community college, I start my 3-hour classes with music, play music during breaks, and occassionally during various activities. I try to end the class with music, too. The student population is quite diverse infact the students hail from approximately 30 countries of origin. Last week, to the students complete enjoyment, I used this CD. Many of the students inquired where they could get it and wanted to see more than time permitted. (It is much more interesting than my lectures, Im sure!) They, like me, enjoyed the vibrancy and beauty of the music, costumes, and dance.

P.D.Q. Bach In Houston - We Have A Problem!

Description
ThreetwooneLaugh-off! Musical mayhem blasts into orbit as Professor Peter Schickele and OrchestraX celebrate the music of composer P.D.Q. Bach, whose oeuvre Schickele "discovered" and unleashed on the world 40 years ago. Long neglected by music scholars (and deservedly so), the "oddest" of Johann Sebastian Bachs 20-odd children composed the most hilarious music of all time. This performance showcases P.D.Q. at the nadir of his creative power, including Schleptet in Eb major, Iphigenia in Brooklyn, "Unbegun" Symphony, Fuga Meshuga, and The Seasonings. And did we mention sportscaster Schickeles play-by-play analysis of Beethovens Fifth, complete with cheerleaders and pom-poms? "P.D.Q. Bach is a very funny showeven for people who like music but dont know why" The New York Times.
Amazon.com
P.D.Q. Bach can perhaps best be described as highbrow slapstick comedy for the musically minded. A skilled composer with a healthy sense of humor and a bent toward the absurd, Professor Peter Schickele is a musical satirist who juxtaposes "serious" classical music with folk tunes, comedic visual cues, farce, and instrumentation ranging from standard orchestral instruments to toy slide whistles, brass-double reed hybrids, and instruments cobbled together from strange components like shower hoses and cardboard tubes. The resulting crowd pleasers keep audiences laughing and wondering what can possibly come next. This 90-minute, live presentation features Peter Schickele and the "Orchestra X" chamber orchestra, is filmed in widescreen, and offers 2.0 stereo or 5.1 surround sound. The program includes the "Desecration of the House Overture," of which the lead-in is by far the most climactic part, the "Schleptet in E-flat Major" which represents P.D.Q.s "soused" period and is a true test of the wind sections fortitude, and "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" which features the double reeds (separate from the oboes and bassoons), the wine bottle played by Professor Schickele, and a "Bargain Counter Tenor" whose performance simply defies description. The "Unbegun Symphony" is an exercise in manic plagiarism and provides an abundance of laughs for the musically literate while the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" makes Beethovens Fifth Symphony accessible to the most die-hard sports fan. The "Fuga Meshuga" illustrates the art of the fugue in a whole new way and "The Seasonings" is a painfully funny demonstration of P.D.Q. Bachs original approach to instrumentation. As Professor Schickele declares in the bonus KUHT interview, it is a sense of context that truly provides the humor in P.D.Q. Bachs works--viewers possessing a sense of humor and a familiarity with classical music will laugh their way through this presentation, others may simply scratch their heads. --Tami Horiuchi

Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
If you love classical music, but can enjoy a good parody, this is a concert for you. Having a good background in music theory comes in handy to truly appreciate the way Schickle has shifted keys, combined themes, etc. Having performed "The Seasonings", I understand just how difficult these pieces truly are. Its great fun.
Recordings are funnier
Rating Point :3 Helpful Point :3
The P.D.Q. Bach franchise has had some hilarious recordings. Because of this it would seem it would be even funnier to see them performed. The choir is in robes, but of terry cloth not polyester. Its fun to see the wacky instruments and shenanigans happening in concert with the music.
But, Schickele has been presenting these concerts for over 40 years - and it shows. The pacing is slow and the humor lacks energy. He attempts to take a rope down to the concert stage but ends up falling in a pile. This would be funny if he were a fit, young Tim Conway. But hes not - instead I was concerned he might have broken a hip. Other gags are momentarily funny but not for the entire time they take to run their course.
Its a nice trip down memory lane but probably more worth a rental.
Excellent PDQ performance
Rating Point :4 Helpful Point :0
If you have never seen Peter Schickele (aka PDQ Bach) in performance before, you should see this one. The CDs are entertaining in themselves, but, with live performances, there are other visual jokes that are just as humerous as the musical. I have always enjoy "The Seasonings" (Schickele number 1/2 tsp), and would like to perform it. THis group did a great job. IT is a recording of a live performance, so the sound is sometimes a bit garbled. But, dont let that dissuade you from SEEING PDQ Bach as well as hearing him. Schickele is a genius in this genre, so enjoy it.

Anglophiles and Britcom aficionados will welcome the video of this delightful 1974 series based on the books by Charlotte Bingham. Happily, the sparkling dialogue and engaging characters wear much better than the actors horribly dated 70s wardrobes. John Alderton and his real-life wife, Pauline Collins, star as C.D.and Clara, the George Burns and Gracie Allen of Hampstead, right down to the "Say goodnight, Clara" that closes each episode.
This boxed set contains the first seven episodes of the series. Episode 1 sets the stage as C.D.and Clara, who have been married, Clara notes, "nearly 10 years next Thursday a week on Monday," recall how they met at "Freddies awful party." Framed by the couples light banter, each of these episodes flashback chronologically to their often comically confused courtship and marriage. Oddly enough, we do not see them joined in (again, Claras words) "holy deadlock," but instead join C.D.and Clara as they embark on their honeymoon and endeavor to keep their newly married status a secret (why they keep it a secret is a bit unclear) by pretending to be a boring, frustrated long-married couple.
"Life with Clara," C.D. observes at one point, "is not a bowl of cherries, its a dish of blouse buttons." And in less expert hands, Clara could get tiresome quickly ("I tend to get things rather muddled," she confesses early on), but Pauline Collins (perhaps best known for her signature role as Shirley Valentine) plays her with a mischievous twinkle that make her leaps of illogic endearing. She particularly shines in episode 4, in which she resists C.D.s efforts to make her dress more fashionably than like "the remnant of a disbanded folk group." --Donald Liebenson

Customer ReviewsOh, Honestly!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :3
This show is very seventies and in my opinion, very good! The characters, CD and Clara recount the events leading up to their marriage. Clara is as cute as a whip and a bit scatterbrained and CD is most understanding and usually the recipient of all the disasters that befall them. A most entertaing show that really is funny in a nice clean sort of way. I give this show two wrenchs up!

No, Honestly is a wonderfully funny British comedy showcasing the comedic talents of Pauline Collins and John Alderton as two young people who meet, fall in love, and eventually marry. The viewer is presented with a tour-de-force of wit and hilarity, as we see Charles (John Alderton), a struggling young actor and Clara (Pauline Collins) a kind of British Gracie Allen, look back fondly on their early days together through comical flashbacks that include football teams, parties, parents, friends, and the sometimes bewildering process of falling truly, madly, unexpectedly in love. No, Honestly will prove a delightful and very popular addition to any community library video entertainment collection.
Very Cute

I saw these shows on public TV several years ago, and I fell in love with this couple. The girlfriend is extremely daffy, and her beau is a laid back kind of guy. I am pleased to find that they are on video.
Fabulous vintage British TV comedy at its best!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
No-Honestly was definitely one of the best comedy series of the 1970s starring one of the most popular married couples in TV at the time - Pauline Collins and John Alderton - fresh from the award-winning success of Upstairs, Downstairs
No Honestly was done in a most entertaining format - both would introduce the show each week with reminiscing about when they first met and eventually married - ten years earlier. The stories were witty, entertaining and extremely funny - Pauline particularly being very adept at comedy. These shows were written by another famous and well-loved married couple who were great Writers Terence Brady and Charlotte Bingham.
Unfortunately, despite its tremendous success and popularity, this would be the only series of No-Honestly ever to be made. It is unsure as to whether any more were ever intended, since the couple were notorious for always moving on to something new rather than sticking at what was successful for them at the time and this was probably due more to the fact that back then, whatever they did worked. Having said all that, if one takes particular notice of the final episode, there are some hints that the series perhaps would not be coming back for a second season, when Pauline Collins attempts to avoid saying goodnight for the very last time, but ends up saying goodbye in several different languages instead, and then goes on to sing along to the popular theme song - which at the time had also become one of the most popular TV themes, and was currently riding high in the top ten as a big hit for the popular Singer Lindsey de Paul who had written and composed the theme.
Surprisingly, this series has never been released in the United Kingdom - on either Video or DVD in its entirety, but only three episodes ever appeared on Video from the thirteen shows that were done back in the early 90s for a very limited period. The whole series was however released in the USA where surprisingly the couple had also become household names - but these were only available on Video, and to date, have never been re-issued on DVD.
This series was strangely issued in two halves - seven episodes in the first box set, and the remaining six on the second. For some reason, the company Acorn Media removed the Ad. Bumpers on the first set, but oddly these were retained in the second set.
This show also includes one or two familiar faces - including a surprise guest appearance of the great film star Vladek Sheybal.
Classic vintage TV comedy encapsulating the 1970s in all its glory and at its best.
Fabulous stuff!

Customer ReviewsExceptional Monk
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :34
Great series of DVDs! I love detective series and this one is excellent. Along with the wonderful detective stories it takes place in medieval times several years after the Crusades. Brother Cadfael, pronounced Cadfile, is played by a superb actor, Sir Derek Jacobi. Some may know him from the series "I, Claudius", or the movie "Dead Again" or any number of other roles.
Cadfael is a monk in an order in the village of Shrewsbury. The mysteries he encounters involve murder or mayhem over inheritance, love, jealousy, and property. Often there are interesting characters that seem involved with the case that are but not in the way we suspect. The sheriff Hugh Beringar, played by Sean Pertwee in this set does an exceptional job as well and is often helpful to Cadfael in pursueing the cases.
The stories in this set involves a variety of mysteries that Cadfael unravels with the assistance from a gamut of people of the times. Cadfael has led and interesting life which we get a peek at with each episode. Even if he was just a monk that cares for the ill using herbs from his garden it would be enough, but there is much more to him. It was hard not to sit through a marathon of watching the set because they are so engrossing. I had not seen any of this series until I bought this set on a whim. After seeing it I immediately ordered the next three sets.
The set is excellent and includes Bios, Background on stories, and much more. The picture and sound quality are first class. I highly recommend buying this set. Fans of movies like "The Name of the Rose" or BBC series like "Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett, or even TV series like "CSI" will probably enjoy it.
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :10
I has seen all the movies up to the fourth series, and have read all the books from Ellis Peters (the Cadfael author) that my library has. This series is as true to those mystery books as possible with their budget, and the result is stunning. They combine action, romance, sublety, and a medieval setting as true as the health department will allow. The movies maintain a true feel for the era, the mental mindset, and the suspicions/beliefs of the times. Derek Jacobis skill as an actor are what brings Cadfael to life, and he hold nothing back in excellent after excellent episode. In only one episode have I been able to figure out the ending before all the clues are pieced together. My only criticism (and it is very minor) is that the actors who portray Hugh Berringer have changed several times. All have been very good in the role, but the first should have stayed. All in all, this series is well worth the expense, and is a real treat for the mystery movie lover (and historical period buff, the recreationists, the, well everybody I know anyway)
LOVED THE SERIES 1!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :10
I liked the videos as much if not more than I liked and enjoyed the Ellis Peters books. Truly well done and enjoyable to watch. I have a hard time picturing the actor who portrays Cadfael as a crusader, but hes very good anyway! Derek Jacobi plays it well.

These are the closest to the books (the characters and stories suffer some distortions) and perfectly cast and acted.
Sir Derek and the Chronicles of a Truly Rare Benedictine.
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :11
When the decision was made to produce for TV several episodes from her mystery series about Brother Cadfael, that 12th century crusader turned monk turned detective who has been, ever since his creation, one of the most compassionate and unusual sleuths of literary history, novelist Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter) was not entirely happy. In fact, as the series star, Sir Derek Jacobi, explains in the extra footage provided on the now-released DVDs, Ms. Peters had very mixed feelings about giving up her brain child and entrusting it to other people who went about cutting and adjusting everything, from the storylines themselves to the way the protagonists speak and even the Chronicles sequence, to the necessities and limitations set by the new medium. But she eventually acquiesced and at one point promised that "the next one I write, Ill make sure its easier for you all to film."
While the thirteen episodes that were eventually produced are, thus, not entirely true to the individual Chronicles they are based on, they are closer than many other movie or TV versions of famous works of literature. Most importantly, they maintain not only the core story lines but also the historical authenticity, atmosphere and spirit set by Ms. Peterss books in a marvelous fashion. And Sir Derek Jacobi brings both the wealth of his experience and skill and all of his own shrewdness, intelligence, sense of humor and empathy to the role of the medieval Benedictine sleuth and thus truly becomes Cadfael -- for the thousands of new fans who are discovering the series through its enactment for TV just as much as for us who loved the books before they were ever transposed to a visual medium. A tremendous cast of supporting actors rounds out an overall excellent production to mention just a few, Julian Firth as the ambitious and narrow-minded Brother Jerome, Terrence Hardiman as Abbot Radolfus and Sean Pertwee (and later Eoin McCarthy) as Under-Sheriff Hugh Beringar, who joins Cadfael in his investigations whenever, as is so often the case, these transcend the world of monastic life and require the administration of secular justice as well as clerical insight. Several episodes also feature noted guest stars.
The episodes are not entirely in the same order as the books however, as most of the cross-references between the books have been eliminated in the screen versions, this is no great harm (although the lacking cross-references are probably one of the things avid readers of the books will find missing). The DVDs also provide background information on Ellis Peters, Sir Derek Jacobi and a number of the individual episodes other actors.
Summary of the episodes contained in this set:
"One Corpse Too Many" (the second Chronicle): King Stephen lays siege to Shrewsbury Castle and, finally victorious, orders the surviving defenders to be executed. But then theres an extra corpse, who clearly wasnt executed. Whodunnit -- and why?
"Monks Hood" (the third Chronicle): Cadfaels and Shrewsbury Abbeys honor is at stake when a guest is found poisoned by Cadfaels own potions ... and the sheriffs sergeant over-eagerly jumps to the wrong conclusions.
"The Leper of St. Giles" (the fifth Chronicle): A lepers grim fate is unexpectedly intertwined with the story of an orphaned heiress, due to be wedded for moneys sake to a despicable old baron, and her lover who is everybodys favorite suspect when the groom turns up dead.
"The Sanctuary Sparrow" (the seventh Chronicle): A young singer is accused of robbery and murder and, hunted by a mob, seeks shelter in the Abbey.
Second Set:
"St. Peters Fair" (the fourth Chronicle)

Bless Me Father, Vol. 1-3, Box Set

Amazon.com
A day in the life of a pair of priests in a small suburban London community is the premise for Bless Me Father. Starring Arthur Lowe as Roman Catholic Father Duddleswell and Daniel Abineri as his young curate, the series is adapted from Peter de Rosas novels. Among the fine episodes included in this boxed set are "The Parish Bazaar," on volume 1, in which Duddleswell is convinced God will provide good weather for the annual fundraiser "The Seal of Confession," on volume 2, in which Duddleswell learns that confessions are being overheard and "The Tennis Match," on volume 3, in which a Catholic becomes Mayor and Duddleswell seeks his favor. Set in the early 1950s, this sitcom occasionally feels dated. If youre looking for a more modern British comedy with a similar theme, you may prefer The Vicar of Dibley, starring comedian Dawn French, or Irelands Ballykissangel, starring Stephen Tompkinson and Dervla Kirwan, might appeal, too. If you want to abandon religion altogether, Absolutely Fabulous, costarring Brits Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley, is wildly outrageous. --Cristina Del Sesto
Description
Based on Peter de Rosas uproarious novels about a small suburban London parish in the 1950s, this much-loved 70s classic has been hailed as one of the hidden gems in Britains sitcom archives. A handsome young priest learns the business from a crusty veteran whos all to human in his encounters with parishioners. Arthur Lowe as Father Duddleswell is the parish priest of every Catholics most nostalgic memories, fundamentally humane and caring--and a bit mischievous.

Customer ReviewsAn excellent Britcom!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :0
This wonderful tape collection contains the first nine episodes of that wonderful show, Bless Me Father. The show was set in the 1950s, and stars veteran actor Arthur Lowe as Father Charles Clement Duddleswell, parish priest. Father Duddleswell is an irascible old fellow, and is used to getting his way. But, when he is given a newly minted curate (Daniel Abineri), he must take the young man by the hand and show him just how to be a parish priest.
This show is an excellent Britcom, one that is sure to please all lovers of good comedy. Yes, the show does feature a Catholic priest, and in this day and age you would expect the show to lampoon the Catholic Church. But, in fact the good fathers are presented as funny, but the show does not seem particularly disrespectful. Overall, I found this to be a very funny show, one that I highly recommend!
In case you are interested, here are the included episodes:
Baptism of Fire - Series 1, episode 1 - 24-Sep-78 - When Father Boyd shows up at St. Judes, ready to take his place as curate, he quickly learns that this job will be anything but easy.
The Bells of St. Judes - Series 1, episode 2 - 1-Oct-78 - When Father Duddleswell get a new bell for the church, he quickly uses it to wake up his sinful, late-sleeping neighbor. But, before you know it a holy war breaks out!
The Parish Bazaar - Series 1, episode 3 - 8-Oct-78 - When Father Duddleswell refuses to make plans for bad weather interfering with the churchs bazaar, does he have too much faith?
The Doomsday Chair - Series 1, episode 4 - 15-Oct-78 - Its time to put an end to the communitys superstitious belief that the local pub has a murderously magical chair, and Father Duddleswell is just the man to do it!
Father & Mother - Series 1, episode 5 - 22-Oct-78 - Father Duddleswell has been holding on to a painting, which was painted on the same canvas as a masterpiece. He wants to sell the painting, but doing so will bring him into conflict with a most formidable nun. Who will win?
The Tennis Match - Series 1, episode 6 - 29-Oct-78 - When the new Catholic mayor ropes Father Duddleswell into a tennis match against the Anglican clergy, he has to think of a way out!
The Seal of Confession - Series 1, episode 7 - 5-Nov-78 - When Father Neil proves to him that the churchs sound system and confessionals are in need of replacement, Father Duddleswell seeks to correct the problem sadly, the cure may be worse than the disease.
Blessings from Heaven - Series 2, episode 1 - 11-Nov-79 - When a woman of the Parish becomes pregnant, Father Duddleswell finds himself at war with Mother Superior over credit for the miracle.
Father Neils First Miracle - Series 2, episode 2 - 18-Nov-79 - When Father Duddleswell makes Father Neil the official Catholic Chaplain of the local hospital, his duties go beyond anything he could possibly have imagine!

I am a fan of Britcoms, but other than the usual "Are You Being Served?" and "Yes, Minister" on PBS Saturday nights, I hadnt seen much. I found these tapes in a used book shop, and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed them! It helps to be a bit of an Anglophile, in understanding the Catholic vs Protestant saga, and to remember that in Britain in the 50s, rationing was still the norm. The show is still very funny, as the characters hold up well in modern day Britain. Fr Duddleswell is a bit of a crotchety old priest, not immune to cheating a bit to get something. Fr Neil is his handsome, young new curate. Together with their housekeeper, a drunken doctor, and local oddities like the "cursed chair," it makes for a town Id want to visit!
British Comedy of Cleric at its Best
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :4
When living in B.C., Canada, I discovered the joys of British TV comedy, and this was one of my favorites.
Fr. Duddleswell is such a perfect character, well playing up to his straight curate, Fr. Boyd. In between is the housemaid, Mrs. Pring and a cast of characters to boot.
Episodes to see from this set include a hilarious episode of Fr. D battling neighboring Billy Buzzle over noise. Its a stitch, including a cameo appearance by "Pontius" Billys black lab who is seated with the Bishop. The Doomsday Chair as well as the Baptism with Fire episodes testify to the good natured fun which the British are now famous for. We in the states should take our cue for what is really good in humor from this sophisticated great laughter producing stuff which doesnt have to resort to the gutter nor violent to keep ones attention.

Set in a London suburb, an Irish Roman Catholic priest gains a thoroghly Engilsh, fresh faced curate hes not sure he wants. This series tells the tales of the life in the parish of St Judes (the patron of hopless cases) of Fr Duddleswell, the pp, Fr Neil, the curate and Mrs Pring the housekeeper. A series of antics reveals a parish priest who is a cunning and wylie, but with a thourougly pastoral heart. Anyone accociated with the Catholic Church will love it.
Great, CLEAN, humor suitable for everyone!
Rating Point :5 Helpful Point :1
You need not be British, Catholic or even Christian to enjoy these shows. They present the hilarious antics of Father Duddleswell as he confronts head on the various issues and problems (such as counseling and fund raising) of a small town cleric. As noted by other reviewers, Father Duddleswell is not above a wee bit of larceny to achieve his goals, but he is ALWAYS acting with the best interests of his flock in mind.
The interactions between Father Duddleswell and Mrs. Pring, his housekeeper, are alone worth the cost of the series as are those between the good Father and his Protestant neighbor. But there is so much more including his education of the young curate!
The acting is superb as is the casting. Add this to the fine writing and situations covered and you have a thoroughly enjoyable series!

A medieval Benedictine monk with a penchant for solving mysteries using deductive reasoning, Brother Cadfael, as expertly portrayed by actor Derek Jacobi in a series of programs produced for British television, tackles a murder case that grows out of a search for the bones of a martyred saint. Traveling from the Abbey of Shrewsbury to Wales after a young monk claims to have had a vision of the martyred St. Winifred, Cadfael and his fellow monks locate the holy relics, which they hope to return to their own abbey. The locals, however, insist that their beloved saint's bones shall remain in Wales, and the monks find themselves being thwarted by a proud Welsh lord who is soon found murdered. The suspicious locals point fingers at the English monks and at a young man in love with the lord's daughter. Cadfael, with the help of a beautiful and plucky heroine (played by Anna Friel), finally figures it all out and justice is ultimately done. The plot has some intelligent and unexpected twists, and fine acting from the supporting cast provides a solid complement to Jacobi's understated performance as the detective monk. Also worth noting is the artfully rendered historical ambience that makes this film, like others featuring Brother Cadfael, worthwhile even for those who don't generally watch mysteries. --Robert J. McNamara
